I didn’t know what I was doing there. I stared up at the apartment building in front of me. It was a lot nicer than the place I was staying. Micah obviously did fairly well. I had to remind myself that I wasn’t hurting for money. It was by choice that I lived in a smaller space.

I made my way to the front door and noticed there was a panel to the side. I had to be buzzed into the building. I frowned. There was a chance that I could call up and he wouldn’t let me in.

Just then, an older woman with a tiny dog came and opened the door. She smiled warmly when she saw my scrubs and held the door open for me. Maybe it was something about medical attire that screamed “trust me”? I could have been some patient escaping from a mental hospital for all she knew.

I walked down the hall, pulled out the sticky note, and noted the apartment number. Judging that every apartment on this floor was in the 100s, Micah’s number of 703 probably meant that he was on the seventh floor. I was relieved there was an elevator, as seven flights of stairs did not seem appealing.

When the elevator opened on the seventh floor, my heart started racing a little more. Was this a good idea? Micah attempted to explain things at work today. I was the one that walked away from him. Maybe I already passed up the time that he was willing to talk to me.

703 wasn’t very far from the elevator bank, and I paused in front of his door. The numbers in front of me were daunting. I could do this. I had to knock and make him talk to me. Just like Lilly said. Like that was going to be an easy task. You couldn’t make Micah do anything he didn’t want to do.

I finally worked up my nerve. My hand raised and my heart beat even faster the closer it got to the door. Three quick knocks and my hand dropped back to my side. I could hear the blood rushing in my ears. My face grew hot, and I heard movement on the other side of the door.

I heard a soft “What the hell?” before the door swung open and the confused face of Micah greeted me.
